The gardeners struggled with grasshoppers and saw a lot of damage in June and July. In the last week of July we received abundant rain, the number of grasshoppers has dropped significantly and the plants have put on a huge growth spurt. The zinnias are blooming and the garden looks beautiful. Tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, corn, beets, carrots are doing well. Gardeners who put down row covers to defeat the grasshoppers are awash in cucumbers and the squashes and pumpkins are going nuts. Our gardeners are resilient. This is my 25th year at the garden. One needs to enjoy the process as well as the produce to be a happy vegetable gardener. The Zoo is now picking up donated produce every week, as is Silver Key, so the grasshoppers did not defeat us. Nature is variable, friends at the garden are consistent.

The last two years I've been here the grasshoppers have absolutely destroyed any and every crop I've planted. This year has been terrible. It has reached a point that I have stopped watering certain plants altogether because it isn't worth the water or time. Even covering them isn't working. The grasshoppers have chewed through my netting.
Now I understand this is simply a natural disaster that the garden really has no control over. HOWEVER. I have two empty WEEDY plots on either side of me, and they do not till them. They may weed whack some of them, but it does nothing to ward off the grasshoppers. I feel like no pest control attempts have been made to solve this problem.
Will not be returning next year.

To cold of an area for proper growth of your vegetables. Beautiful area, people are semi friendly and association staff not so much and not willing to accommodate your needs or request.
