I have purchased my sod from Ron & Justin for 11 years now. It is a bit of a drive for me but the customer service makes it worth it. They are great people that care about what they do and it shows in the high quality of the product they put out!

About 5 years ago I started using their shade blend fescue mix. I initially purchased the product for a customer with a heavily shaded backyard. It was a good choice For his low light back yard. After seeing how good it grows in the full sun field at the sod farm I had a discussion about the product itself with Justin. Since fescue has thicker deeper roots it thrives better in most conditions. I still plant primarily bluegrass because that is what people in the Chicago suburbs want. I do, however; recommend it to a 100% of my customers because it is a much lower maintenance higher quality product in my personal opinion. 1/3 of my customers (the smart ones) take my advice, and they appreciate it in the long run.

The fescue does have a coarser texture but it stays greener requires less care and is a better looking lawn from the street which is where your "curb appeal" is observed. I installed my "shade mix" fescue lawn late November 2016. I have watered my lawn 0 times in 3 years and it is the best looking lawn on the block the majority of the time.

Long story short: if you want a good product that will hold up with low maintenance; shop with these guys and buy the shade mix!
