I usually post reviews to praise businesses for their excellent services and barely when they fail to meet expectations but this time around it’d be remiss if I didn’t review Southland Nursery for my absolute miserable experience with its owner, who, at first seems jovial but untrustworthy and after doing business ended up being a scam artist.
They say you should follow your first intuition and I should have. Avoid Southland Nursery at all costs. And do yourself a favor, read the other reviews and as well as those on yelp. There is no smoke without fire, most reviews are bad.

Upon first meeting Gerry, he seemed like a harmless exaggerator. In reality, he proved to be an untrustworthy businessman, acting with poor intent. I purchased a 36" box tree and soil from Gerry, who assured me it was "the best soil possible" and guaranteed it wouldn't settle. His crew installed the tree, and the leaves had all dropped within a month. When I called Gerry, he brushed it off, claiming the tree was just in shock and would recover by spring.

Spring came, and the tree remained lifeless. A landscape architect confirmed our worst fears: the tree had been planted too low and suffocated soon after planting. Gerry eventually came to inspect the tree after we insisted, only to admit that the tree was indeed dead and "worthless." He refused to take any responsibility, arrogantly insisting his crew "never make mistakes" and dismissing the photographic evidence that the initial soil level was incorrect. His defense? "You can't prove anything!"

Gerry is a scam artist with zero regard for customer satisfaction and no sense of accountability. His business is completely untrustworthy. Support any number of the small nurseries in LA and avoid Southland at all costs!

Update in reply to Southland’s reply that aftercare was the issue. The tree was DEAD when you suggested it was in shock. It died within a month and you brushed off our worries and said it was transplant shock. Your reply only further implicates your admission that it was YOUR PLANTING that killed the tree. It did not die a year later. You even admitted it on the phone and then tried to sell us another $2000 tree. Shameless.

Great nursery , beautiful plants and really knowledgeable and friendly people.

My wife wanted a Catalina Ironwood tree for our parkway as they are native Californian and drought tolerant.
Southland got us a beautiful specimen and their crew planted it with no muss or fuss.

Excellent track for sprinting, trails for running, tennis and basketball courts, tables and shelters for parties, soccer leagues, boxing, etc. about the only thing they don't have is a pool, but AD Barnes Park nearby has one.

Worse experience ever .. ripped off ..sold my cousin a dead plum tree and she tried to refuse the tree at delivered and they still left it at her property and he does not want to answer her phone calls nor texts and will not give back her money ..she even tried to ask for a exchange or a different kind of plant but he still won’t cooperate..
